Something for the Weekend 42

Well I'm in a bit of a quandary... we do have a clear winner to this week's teaser, but in truth we also have several contestants who were, at least in part, technically correct... oh dear... life can be so difficult at times. :roll:

So, you were asked to identify this:
Something for the Weekend No 42

A spore? A fungus? My armpit? Mould on a tree? Barnacles? Lichen extremely close up? :yes:

Lichen it is... close up. :yes:

Once again happy28 is spot on with her guess and this week so is lizdavies, but here's the thing... Lichen is part fungus...

Unlike trees, grasses and flowers, a lichen is not a single plant. Instead, it consists of two partners that live together symbiotically - with both of them benefiting from the alliance. One partner is a fungus. The other is a green alga or cyanobacterium, often called a blue-green alga. (from the Natural History Museum)

This week's joint winners have to be Happy and Liz for there perfect answers, but I'm inclined to offer special runner up prizes to FlimFlamFilmFan, Munzly, Ranfuchs, ajnspencer and tylluanpenry who all gave kind of half-answers... :yes:

Oh really, that's far too many winners. I think the best solution is to offer the winning prize to someone who was working and only got here in time to learn the answer.
